SURVIVORS - BBC

Postby mighty ATV on Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:02 pm

Hi all

just wondered what we all thought of the first episode of the new series and also of the scenes featuring our very own ATV Centre. There was much more extensive footage than i thought there would be. Centrals multi coloured railings were clearly visable in some shots (at the back entrance on Bridge st) and it even looks like they used some of the interiors for scenes too.

Just wondered if they used the rubble from Central house as well. I must say it looked very convincing as a derelict hospital and it made a great location shot.

what do we think? also i wonder if it will feature in further episodes or if thats it now.

Good to see it on mainstream TV. I wonder how many locals in Brum recognised it.

cheers

Greg

First time in ages I have been able to watch something when broadcast.... I was glued looking for the scenes that included the studio building. As you say plenty of recognisable parts of the exterior and one or two if the interior too. Certainly the outside scenes used rubble in the area at the bottom of the service road on the north side of the building towards where Central House stood. That was the scene in which Max Beasley was walking away whilst the building crumbled, and a block of concrete fell on an ambulance.

Given that it is supposed to be in Manchester, I found it odd that they used a shot of Broad Street including the Hyatt and the Lloyds TSB building which to anyone who has been to Birmingham are very recognisable landmarks. Even Baskerville House was featured in the first scene!

I doubt the studios will be in it again though, given the story was that the 'hospital' was being destroyed in an attempt to prevent the spread of disease.

Great to see it there though on a prime time show

Hi Peter

thanks for your thoughts. Imm hoping those explosions at the ATV centre were Computer Generated images :D

I also saw the alpha tower just adjacent to those scenes you mentioned.

agreed it was great to see it to such an extent on prime time.

Forgot to watch it last night until about 15 mins in! Just watched the first 15 minutes thanks to BBC iPlayer HD, and it's truly fantastic. Love the use of dry ice clouds to cover up real life civilisation in Bridge Street, and I'm impressed that Broad Street was obviously shut down briefly in order to get the-boss-from-Peep-Show over to the hospital.

Max Beesley and co wondering around in the rubble with no hard hats or face masks! Proof that health-and-safety hasn't taken fully over.

I don't think the many of the corridor scenes were done inside, but certainly the stairs shot was done there. Nice to see how they used the demolition of the canteen to the story's advantage. The 'rebuilt' block on the canteen (where they walk down the car park ramp, shot from a static angle) is obviously CGI, I reckon I'd have spotted that without knowing ATV Centre.

The top floor burning and collapsing was more realistic, a lot of effort went into that CGI. I'll keep my eyes upwards next time I'm near B1 2JP!

I'll do some screengrabs tomorrow night. Well done to Kudos so far.

I reckon the empty Broad Street scenes will have been filmed at around 5am on a Sunday morning. They did this on season one when filming in Manchester, as it is the only time of day there are hardly any people about...

Same here!! I watched the episodes, but recorded it too, and am going to go through it again - bit by bit, and pick out the bits with our ATV Centre on.

Did anyone notice the old ATV/Central Studios again night? I am sure the scene with Naj and the teenage girl in when they were walking inside a building was the studios again, the windows on the left hand side of the screen looked familar and the insides were completely stripped out to bare concrete. I might be wrong but I am hoping someone else might have seen it.
Move along... nothing to see here...

I don't think that was it, but the area surrounding the studios was put to use, particularly where they are reunited with Abby. If you're particularly observant, you can see "Birmingham City Council" and its accompanying logo on a poster where Abby wonders down one 'Manchester' street. The reunion takes place in a litter-strewn Edmund Street crossroads.

Just to add that scene was in the studios. Including the part where Naj and the girl was on the stairs

About a week or two after the series ended, Julie Graham announced her move to a long-running ITV1 drama series. That probably killed Survivors.

Oh, it was the Bill that Julie joined. Bad move.
